Plan-it Construction Ltd Environmental Policy 2010

As a construction company we are known for our wide range of specialist skills that incorporate the experienced handling of all aspects of the trade from specialist construction projects to large building refurbishment and renovation projects. In addition to this, it has been our aim, to enhance this service with an emphasis on developing and promoting eco-friendly & energy-saving products and practices and renewable forms of energy.

We recognise that our operations have an effect on the local, regional and global environment. As a consequence of this, we are committed to continuous improvements in minimising any negative impact on the environment.

Environmental regulations, laws and codes of practice will be regarded as setting our minimum standards.

Employee involvement in environmental matters is encouraged and is promoted through communications and a constant reappraisal of working methods, techniques and building products.

Our specific aims are to:

Recycle and re-use construction materials and waste wherever possible.

Recycle waste products for construction use (e.g. sawdust) wherever possible.

Research and promote ecologically friendly construction techniques.

Research and promote new ecologically friendly construction materials.

Source and utilise locally produced products wherever possible.

Promote, Research and Use wherever possible, Energy-Efficient products and sources of Energy.

Recycle and re-use construction materials and waste

Where possible, all materials taken from a construction site are either stored and re-used or taken to Wigan tip for recycling. We also try where possible to use reclaimed bricks, internal doors and roof slates.

Recycle waste products for construction use

Timber waste is either recycled at local recycling sites or is used in future construction. A good example of the further use of sawdust is how wood sawdust can be mixed with glue to produce a wood coloured sealant to be used when laying solid wood flooring instead buying wood coloured glue.  This ensures the waste is fully recycled.

Research and promote ecologically friendly construction techniques

We try wherever feasible to use timber frame construction in our new build projects as this is more environmentally sustainable and the where possible the timber used is FSC certified. We also use ‘sun pipes’ in a lot of our design as they offer free environmentally friendly lighting.

Research and promote new ecologically friendly construction materials

We are committed to searching for and promoting products derived from waste products and/or to reuse materials where we can. We are also conducting trials to test the qualities and performance of a range of eco-paints, so that we can reliably recommend these to our clients.

In addition, we are carrying out trials of different types of insulation materials and methods to monitor performance and embodied energy costs.

Source and utilise local materials and tradesmen where possible.

Based in the North West of England we have access to a range of locally available materials such as Stone, Slate, Brick and Aggregates. We try where possible to use local products in our projects as this not only helps support the local economy but it also helps reduce the transportation pollution of the materials used.

We are also committed to using local tradesmen in our projects if we need to use subcontractors. This way there is not a huge environmental impact as a result of their travelling to site. We also encourage van sharing for all our tradesmen to reduce the impact on the local environment.

Promote, Research and Use wherever possible, Energy-Efficient products and sources of Energy.

We are constantly trying to source sustainable products where possible and affordable. We can adapt projects to make use of naturally available resources such as using rainwater for waste water supplies or natural lighting instead of electric lights. We fit energy saving light bulbs were approved by the client and we are constantly challenging our construction methods to assess if we can perform our tasks in a more environmentally sustainable and friendly way
